I first took the bulb out and brought it back to Makro ,only to find they needed the full unit before they could do anything.
After returning the 55 miles round trip i took the TV back again only to find that it may take 2 Wks to fix!, I said that was not acceptable and would like my money back to which they replied NO!.
I think i will get my solicitor to get in touch with the manager i was talking to, But i just wanted to let everyone know what way Makro's return policy works. From now on i will be sticking with the bigger stores that inc delivery and pick up returns in there price.

if its more than 30 days old realistically you're obliged to accept a repair unless it can be shown thats its an inherent fault in the TV
I understand your frustration but getting your solicitor involved will only cost you money as realisitically I don't think Makro have done anything less than they are obliged to - remember makro don't have their own repair shop they are a wholesaler so it will have to go through the manufacturer - all shops are the same, my mate had a projection tv from S&R took 6 weeks of fixing before they gave up and replaced it
question for you - is the bulb not guaranteed for so many hours? are you sure you haven't exceeded the lifespan in which case its a consumable for the TV rather than a faulty part?Norn Iron Club Member #64

If they supply the bulb (which as it's less than a year I'd expect them to do) then could you not change the bulb yourself?0

If i went to the Sony shop in B/fast i could of got it y/day and fixed it myself.
The TV lets you know when the part has broke.
You are right tho, If i did buy the bulb myself its guaranteed for the yr but if Makro sends it out to get fixed the manager said that part fitted would not be guaranteed?.
I do not agree with you regarding solictor fees as if it went to court they would have to pay all costs.
My family has been in business for 30 yrs and we know from experience that the customer always wins, They can offer to fix this but it has to be done without any inconvenience to me.0 -
I used to work for Makro and the return rate of electrical goods failing was abysmal, if i had any advbice for anybody it would be not to buy electrical goods from Makro at all from any of the branches as 90% of the time you will just end up returning them.Savings Total so far for 2023: £8,062.580

but lets be realistic here, you're talking about going to court over a bulb which has worn out - makro generally deal in end of line electronic items, and projection tv;s are definitely an ageing animal, I'm not saying you wouldn't win i'm just saying is it really worth it?Norn Iron Club Member #64

I would be taking them to court for a new item failing within 1yr and also for van rental to bring the TV back to them along with fuel costs.
It would not cost me anything to try.
I just want a TV ,And after paying the price i did anyone would expect the best of products and service.
If you run a search on customer rights its all there in black and white.
To start with Y/day i only wanted the bulb changed but after getting messed about all day and dealing with the manager that thinks Makro has its own laws have made it easy for me to have a go at them in court.0 -
fire ahead, I understand your frustration, but if makro have offered to fix it I fail to see why the big drama - fair enough the manager may have been an idiot - I had a similar incident in the O2 shop in Ards a couple of months ago where the assistant manager thought his shop rules overruled consumer law - but we all have to fork out for our own transport back to whatever shop we buy things from - its not makro's fault you chose to shop a 55 mile round trip away
also you say taking them to court for a new item failing within a year - they're a reseller if you're doing that surely you want Mr Sony?
they've offered to repair it, push them they may give you gift vouchers for the hassle and inconvenience but in reality what more do you expect them to do?
to be honest it sounds like you're hacked off rightly so about the tv being out of action for a couple of weeks, but also some frustration at what some customers have done to your "family business"
as I said my mate had a similar problem with a rear projection TV, now fair enough S&R lent him a set for the 6 weeks but makro are under no obligation to do it........................
your call I've said my bit and I wish you good luck if you decide to pursue itNorn Iron Club Member #64

Unless the OP is suggesting a claim under some form of warranty/guarantee with Sony then any action would be against Makro. However, as Makro only deal with businesses and not 'normal' consumers, sale of goods legislation would not apply and hence any claim would have to be based on contract law.
IMHO The failure of the projection bulb would not give you the right to reject the item as you appear to have had it for more than a few days and taking a couple of weeks to arrange for a replacement bulb does not appear to be extreme, particularly as Makro do not have their own repair facility.
However, if you do decide to 'steam in' good luck!!!0
