  • Ok, for the benefit of those on the thread that seem to think Im a liar, here is my story with an Amilo.

I bought it at xmas 06, around about June it died a death. As it was covered by the 12 month warranty it went in for repair and I was a little surprised to discover it needed a new hard drive. All repaired it came back a week later. By August the powerpack had failed so back it went again for a new one. At the end of October it failed for the third time, now needing a new motherboard. This time they hadn't got the part and so I was kept hanging on for 6 weeks waiting for one. In total, the laptop had been out for repair for 10 weeks or so.

Eventually, they tech department admitted defeat and I was issued Dixons vouchers to the value of the laptop to replace it, which I did with a Toshiba.

I have since spoken to other Amilo owners (friends, family) who have all encountered problems with these machines. Indeed, when I returned to Dixons to get my replacement the manager of the store quietly told me that he was "nothing short of amazed" when they started to sell Amilo's in store again, because Head Office had made the decision not to stock them some 6 months previously because the return rate was so notoriously bad.

Maybe some of you were lucky with yours, maybe myself and my acquaintances were unlucky with ours. Either way, that is the reason I wouldnt have an Amilo if you gave it to me for free.

Fortunately for you - I have no plans to give you my amilo laptop for free.
