Which species of squash?

I got my organic box tonight with these lovely looking, and what I presume to be, squashes in it! Can anyone tell me what variety they are please, and do I treat them the same as butternut squash and pumpkins? ... i.e. roast, soup or stew etc?

    Cheers :D

This might help a bit CQ Or this

The green and orange one is, I think, "Gem" squash, but I'm probably wrong, very tasty if it is. icon7.gif

If I find myself with a squash I'm cannot identify I find baking them is usually the best bet.

    Enjoy icon10.gif
My first reply was witty and intellectual but I lost it so you got this one instead :D

All gem squash I have grown have been smaller than the round squash in the picture, and smooth skinned (no ridges) but of similar colour, either solid green, or green with yellowing.
If it helps, we would split gem squash, cook in a small amount of just-boiling water, or preferably steam, then scoop out the pips, let some butter melt in the hollow, and eat from the shell. Very young gem we could leave the seeds in and eat them as well.
No idea what these squash are, sorry.

Thanks for those websites Racy :A ... think I've tracked them down to be some sort of Acorn squash, and they sound very yummy roasted and stuffed! :T :D

The slightly elongated black/dark green one could be acorn squash. The other flattened looking one could be kabocha (Japanese pumpkin)??

What I like about squashes is that you can display them in a huge bowl/basket for weeks (look fantastic and cheaper than flowers!) and then when you want a change you can eat them! :D

Soup is always an option if you aren't sure what type they are.

I think I'm going to try something other than soup as I always seem to make that with the butternut squashes but I'm spoilt for choice :D

There's this recipe, which would be a complete meal in itself, or this very yummy sounding recipe that sounds more like something you'd have as a dessert! :j
