Can I live In Australia

Hi There,
I have a couple of quick questions regarding bankruptcy.
1.A friend of mine found it very difficult to get credit since her father went bankrupt. I thought each individual's finances were judged on thier own merits. For example should I get married, would my future wife find it difficult to get credit due to my bankruptcy?
2.I would like to live in Australia. Does anyone know if it's possible having been declared bankrupt in April this year?
Any thoughts warmly received.
Regards

1. that shouldn't be the case as credit checks are done on the individual's name now not the address, and therefore should in no way affect your friend (unless she has the same name as her father, in which case there may be a little confusion, but still this shouldn't be the case if the companies are doing their jobs correctly.) Get her to check her credit file as there may be something on them that is causing her to be denied cards rather than her father.
2. Yes no problems, you just need to give your OR an address he can contact you on, wherever in the world that may be.Do not feed the trolls please.0 -
I'd check with the Australian embassy if you are concerned your bankruptcy may hold you back from emmigrating there.

I was declared br in Feb and will be moving to Oz myself at some point as my wife's an Aussie. There is no problem with moving to Oz after bankruptcy, and even better news is that your credit starts fresh again as they're not bothered about doing British credit checks,so if you want a mortgage all they want to know is if you can afford to pay it back out of your earnings in Oz. Good luck0

Sorry to jump on the bankwagon here, but we are in the same boat. We have alot of debt and have been told by CCCS that our only real option is to go bankrupt  . We are quite happy to do this after years of 'getting by' and are ready for a fresh start, but we are wanting to move to australia in the next 3-5 years and are worried that this will affect our application. My other half will already have a job out there as he can do a secondment and move from his current job with the same company but to australia. Can anyone advise? This is all new to me and i need some reassurance from people who know what i am talking about! Thanks0

From everything I've managed to find it shouldn't affect you at all, especially as your credit rating will probably start from 0 again when in Oz - I did searches on Emigration Forums and others have asked this question and the replies always seem to be 'as long as you don't have a criminal record, it makes no difference, as they only ask about criminal record on the visa forms and not BR and BR isn't a criminal offense'. However, I personally haven't been through the Oz immigrant forms myself so couldn't tell you 100% - if it's anything like the NZ process you can do it online though, so you can go and look at the forms and see if there is anything on there. When I went to NZ I had to prove I had x amount of money to support myself upon arrival into the country, so you may need a bank statement or something, but to be honest, no one checked mine when I applied for a visa (I just said that I had access to the required amount) and no-one checked at immigration either (which I was expecting so took bank statements etc showing the amount in them).
Hope this helps - you may find more info specifically for Oz on an expats forum though, there are loads about, just do a google search for it. Good luck
