Building a wall before I move in

Hi

I've just bought a new house and have heard that if I get any further building work done before I move in I don't have to pay the VAT on it.

I'm thinking of getting a wall built.

Does anyone know of this scheme or how to claim the money back?

Thanks in advance

  • If you do get "extras" included in the purchase price, remember that it will be subject to stamp duty.

The way I understand it, is that unless you were the original developer then you will not be eligible for zero rate VAT. You could however, ask the original builder to do it and include the cost in the house price or he could bill you at a cheaper rate as he would not pay VAT on the wall. I cannot see another way around it.
