How easy is it to alter clothes?

Hi all -
As you can see from my signature, I've lost 2 stone in the past few months, and am losing dress sizes to match. :j
I've been having to buy clothes in several sizes because I know that in a few weeks they'll be too big again. It's costing a fortune
I've been giving my old clothes to a friend, and what she doesn't want goes to the charity shop.
Some of my old 'fat' clothes are gorgeous, and I can't bear the thought of giving them away. But they're ridiculously baggy on me. It's mostly tops (mostly fitted ones) that I would like to keep.
Getting them altered will cost quite a lot, so I was thinking of getting hold of a little mini sewing machine and then take an inch or so at a time from the sides of the tops so that they shrink with me.
Am I missing anything though? Is it that easy?

There is a sewing thread running on mse CLICK HERE They are many people on there who could best advise you.
Some clothes are relatively easy to down size by a small amount but it really does depend on the style, material and the size you want to go from and to.£2 Coins Savings Club 2012 is £4
