How to get rid of flies in my broccoli?

Can anyone help. My DD2 loves broccolli so i grew some last year which looked lovely but no matter how much i washed/soaked it in salt water, i couldn't get rid of the flies.

This year i bought some enviromesh and grew them under this (it's supposed to keep insects out). I once again have some stunning looking broccolli but there are still flies in it (not as many as before though).

I washed it for ages and ages yesterday and soaked it twice in salt water for an hour each time...but still there were flies floating up when i boiled the broccolli.

Now i know some of you are going to say a few flies won't hurt, but i really don't like the thought of eating any flies and i really don't want to waste my lovely broccolli.

Has anyone got any ideas how i can get rid of the flies?

P.s I garden organically so i don't spray with chemicals

  • Well - never heard of this one!!

With greenfly on fennel or other leafy things I would put htem into a bucket of water and leave over night - not salty tho' try that - or

    - what about putting the brocolli heads in water in a jug/tub small enough to have them all sticking up like soldiers (so the flies only have one way up), then fill up the tub and leave them to soak? flies should float up?

Or - a friend has just said, why not put them in a tub of water with a lid (tub a good third bigger than your broccolii - give them a shake and then rinse & repeat? Until clear? AND IF NOT SURE THEN SOAK AFTER THIS.

    Funny little bugs eh?
Agree the only thing worse than a bug in your veggies - is half a bug.
