Win a Matis Tiller Kit worth over £500
As your summer crops are cleared away it's a good time to remove any leftover plant debris and start digging over vacant areas of your plot – the approaching cooler weather will help you by breaking down some of the bigger clumps of soil as the ground freezes and thaws.
If you have a sizeable vegetable plot, a tiller will help you swiftly work over the beds as the rotating blades cut through compacted earth (just remember to remove perennial weeds first to avoid cutting up the roots and spreading them around the plot). The resulting fine tilth will be better able to support plant growth in the coming season. If you've just taken on an overgrown allotment, or find digging over your patch physically challenging, it will be a huge asset.
The Mantis four-stroke tiller is hard to beat for useful features. There's a speed control and shut-off switch positioned right by your fingertips, plus grips which make tilling rough or rocky soil more comfortable. The tines are guaranteed for a lifetime against breakage, and dig down to 25.5cm. And you can choose from an electric or petrol fuelled model.
The four-stroke tiller is compact, lightweight (11kg) and has carry handles – so you won't have to drag it over and around other people's plots before you can use it. There is also a range of attachments for the tiller that are suited for use on an allotment or garden plot. They variously mean you can use the machine to turn and mix debris in compost piles, plough furrows for planting, till soil in raised beds and other small spaces, and dig holes to plant new trees or shrubs. Or, if you have a grassed area as well as a veg plot, it can dethach and aerate lawns, or edge borders.
The planter attachment allows you to dig 15cm deep furrows, perfect for tomato plants, corn, beans, asparagus crowns and onion sets. It is also great for tilling in narrow areas; creating raised beds; and cutting trenches for underground irrigation hoses.
The furrower attachment will allow you to dig deeper furrows and higher mounds, for plants such as leeks that require a deep-planted environment. You can also use it to earth up around rows of potatoes. The blade can be easily adjusted to any of the five height settings and ploughs the earth to a width of around 50cm.
The solid steel kick stand allows to you to take a break from work whenever you need it – just kick the stand and the tiller will stand Win! upright, then tip it up when you want to get going again. There is also a border edger available to help neaten up your plot and pathways, and trim along hedgerows.
The Mantis tiller is priced at £339 with free postage, with the attachments priced from £19.
