the fine for late notification is (i think) £100.
You won't be charged any interest or surcharges because, as yet, nothing is late. if you started in Sept 07, your first year of self employment is 07/08 and your first tax return will be due on 31 january 09, along with any payment due for 07/08, plus half of what is due for 08/09 (based on 07/08 figures). If you've not been putting aside any money to account for tax, it's probably a good idea to start now.0 -
despite my last post i agree with others that you are probably an employee see
http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/employment-status/index.htm
being treated as an employee would be so much better (sick pay, maternity pay, annual leave, redundancy etc etc) so I'd report them anonymously - HMRC won't tell them that they got a tip off just that they are randomly looking into it.0 -
I was recently on a HMRC self employed course and the woman next to me was late in registering and they let her off by coming on the course.
Be nice and apologetic and you might get treated leniently.0
