Out of Control Debts\Charges

  • When I got into difficulty when I first moved away, I returned to a Barmans job 3 nights a week the same type of work that had gotten me through Uni. Kept me afloat and I got paid to go out for the night. Might not be your thing but its worth a go.
My broad mind and narrow waist are slowly swapping places!!

I'll probably be flamed for saying this, but the charges that you incur are not legally enforcable - you can get them back.

I have just recovered £180 from Smile and £1700 from Abbey.

PM me if you want to know how to do it - I will help you - I won't go into it in the forum as every time I have in the past, people seem to get very upset about it and it nearly always turns into a slanging match.

    EDIT:

Also, watch BBC2 today at 12:30 and/or read the Money section in Saturdays Guardian. I explain how to do it in there.

    EDIT 2:

Not on BBC2 - item is being held over to another day.

I recently got £240 of charges returned from Halifax but they said they wouldn't do it again! I explained to them that time that they spiralled out of control.

Abbey said the same to me on occassion - I sucessfully recovered ALL charges made on my acount over a 13 month period - with interest!!

They can say whatever they like about the charges - the fact remains that they are not legal, so you can get them ALL back - not just the ones they return to you as a 'goodwill' gesture.

...and with Smile, my account with them had been closed for nearly 2 years when I got the charges back.

Sounds good, I have a lot of charges over the last year probably enough to pay off a c/c in full. I would be grateful if you could PM me the details.

    Dont get your hopes up.

I don't expect a lot from banks, honest.
I know that some is debt, but the amount of charges banks pile on me is stupid!

Change to a Basic Bank Account as soon as possible, I was incurring bank charges of that order before I moved to the Co-Op and I've never looked back.

Please accept my apologies if you have taken my advice and opened a Coop Basic Bank Account. I totally withdraw this recommendation, as they have now introduced a £19.50 charge per unpaid item - with no maximum!

Its ok, the fact their nearest bank was 50 miles away put me off.
I've decided to get any halifax easycash account 2 go along side my 2 other halifax accounts. I will pay off the overdraft & not use that account at all, whereas the other I have money in & will continue to pay the DD/SO etc from.

Not spoken to my parents yet, things have got better since I last posted so will have to see how it goes.
Writing everything down & budgeting for my expenses (rather than my debts) has shown me I can cover what I pay out and pay a bit more towards my debts each month! Just hope I can continue & learn from my mistakes.
