Baby's 1st Birthday

Hello everyone.

I'm wondering if anyone can help because I'm in a bit of a panic. My little boy is 1 on Saturday and we sent some invitations out to close family and friends for a bit of a birthday party in the afternoon. It seemed like such a good idea at the time, but now it's nearly here I have absolutely no idea what to do! He's our first child and we don't know any other children - we were the first in our group of friends to get married and start a family. I know that I want to bake his birthday cake myself, but just have visions of people arriving and standing around looking bored. I know that he's too young for party games - EEK!! I don't know what I'm doing!

Don't panic - people will know it is a 1st birthday and be there for you on your special day.

I am a firm believer in the 1st birthday being a milestone for the Mum (and Dad) and also the baby and it should be a celebration.

Relax and chill if they are friends they will love being in your company. Perhaps just serve tapas in the garden if the weather is nice with a glass of your favourite tipple??

Congratulations on the birthday. The 1st year is a hard but rewarding year for you as a family.

Perhaps do a bbq if the weather is nice? couple of drinks in the garden etc ... don't panic it will all be fine. Baby is not going to remember it but you will :)

  • Thank you both for your replies - that's a really lovely way of looking at it. I know that he won't remember it, but just want everything to be perfect and for everyone to have a good time. Sadly we can't do anything in the garden because I don't have one! We have a very small 2 bedroom town centre terrace with a tiny shared yard. We had some people move in about 6 months ago and they've decided to practically tear their house down and dump it in and around the massive skip they've parked in the yard. It's a bone of contention between us.... *fume* We have no outside space at all at the moment. I guess if it all gets too cramped, the 13 of us can always go to the pub!

Am feeling much better now. Thank you. :D

How about some simple nibbles and drinks - crisps, dips, carrot sticks, melon wedges...

I've made this cake a few times and it comes out really well and is lovely... http://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/4508/chocolate-birthday-cake-. I didn't use wholemeal flour or ice the shapes on the top and it was still fab!

I would have suggested the garden too until I read that. Our dd was 1 in June and we also invited friends and family. For an inside I would decorate with balloons etc, provide food, drink and music, maybe even dvd's of baby if you have them?

At our dd's she was the centre of attention from everyone and we were so busy running around making sure everyone was fed and watered etc it all went by fast, but everyone enjoyed themselves and it was a great chance for everyone to catch up and have a chat.

Hope you have a lovely day, and don't stress over it too much

P.S I cheated and bought a cake lol

Agree with the others, I went mad on our sons first birthday and regretted it. I have never spent so much money on a birthday since. He hated all of the people and it really wasn't about him - just me being on a 'I have a son' thingy!!

Some balloons will be nice as will nibbles and if you have a camcorder, video it. He will love the balloons.

Wine is good too. For you more than anything. Lol.

    Have a lovely day.
