Extension – Heat Elect/Solar/Heat Pump/Wind etc

Morning

I’m investigating the possibilities of our heat and electricity requirements for our new extension. Our House is a 3 bed detached, the extension plans is to double the size of the house.

Our current combi has the capacity to run the size of our current house, so new equipment will be required.

Space isn’t an issue as we have a 200ft x 50ft Garden, our house is east West facing and we living in the countryside. We also have a good supply of gas.

Our current bill is approx £1200 for both gas and electricity and our usage is likely to go up

As the prices of the utilities costs seem to be creeping up monthly and the emphasis of green technology, what people consider installing if they were looking into their heating and energy supply?

Your options are to get a new gas boiler and extra radiators or Ground Source Heat Pump system using the garden as catchment area or a woodburner.
The woodburner would be cheapest to run if you could collect your own wood but the least convenient. Cosy tho.

you can't run radiators off a GSHP-it is low grade heat and unsuitable for the temperatures required. It is mainly meant for underfloor heating

Underfloor heating for the extension, tho whether the garden is big enough?, in which case bigger boiler tho not a combi.

Whilst I agree that underfloor heating is the ideal method, I understood that you could simply oversize the radiators by 50% or so; or fit a double or triple panel radiator.

we run a 12kw heat pump in our home. The heat output is around 50oC - ideal for underfloor heating,as opposed to a running temp for radiators of around 80-ish....
