How are NI prices compared to Southern Ireland prices, now please. I am due over next month, and, basically, just needed to know where best to fill up.

South is slightly cheaper, just be careful if you are paying with a card. Your bank may charge you a percentage for using it "abroad". Have a look on the website that tells you the cheapest petrol prices, can't remember the web address off the top of my head.

Asda Ards is same price, Maxol are still ripping off customers as of this morning, 117.9 and 130.9 in the two I passed on way to work

Down South its roughly 17p a litre cheaper for both, was down there at the weekend, saved £9.35 on a fill up - as for the cards issue some garages will ask you if you want to pay the sterling or euro price, pick sterling should save the transaction charge

That just about sums it up, seatzie - when I first started going to Ireland (North and South) - if anyone lived within 50 miles of the border, they would drive to the north to fill up - in fact one chap in Dundalk would only sell me £2.00 worth of petrol to 'get me over the border'. Last time I was over, the NI border 'goldmine' service stations were deserted.
It can't ALL be down to the price of oil, can it?

    Can someone clarify this?
I thought if you were paying with a card, then it was best to choose to pay in the local currency because hotels/petrol stations etc could choose to charge a much worse rate than the card provider. Maybe best to pay in cash or use a Nationwide card?

given that you're making a relatively small purchase of say roughly £50 the difference in paying in euro and risking a transaction fee wouldn't outweigh the £1 or so difference between the exchange rate being €1.25 or €1.21

if you're on holiday and spending lots yes go for nationwide etc, if you're doing a once a month purchase for £50 or £60 is the hassle worth it?(unless of course you're lucky enough to live near the border!)

when I bought mine at the weekend I had in my head a figure that would be a good exchange rate (I use euro conversions every day in work) and the station option of sterling was about 12p out on what I reckoned..........

Nationwide themselves advise always paying in local currency NOT sterling.
Recent example of a petrol purchase initially put through mistakenly in sterling Euro52.36/£42.49.
After being cancelled by the filling station cashier (it was their mistake) the same transaction was put through in Euros Euro52.36/£41.31.
So £1.18 cheaper. Multiply that by the thousands of petrol purchases going through and you can see why the filling stations want you to pay in sterling!

But you might lose if the petrol station is using a poor exchange rate to price in sterling especially if you're a dedicated a money saver and know what card to use in these circumstances.
