Will OR allow more rent?

Hello from a regular lurker.
Discharged last month and paying a pretty hefty IPA. Currently rent from a housing association - cheap rent but horrible area!
Looking to rent privately but would at least double the rent. Would the OR allow this extra expenditure? Not looking to rent a mansion, just a reasonable house in a nicer area nearer daughter's school, parents etc.

Hi Emma,
Would'nt think thats a goer unless it saves in other areas.
Would suggest if you have a surplus put it away somewhere safe for when you need it.
You have done the hard bit it will only get easier but don't rush it.

Hi Emma,
Can't see the harm in asking the OR, can only say no, but it would be a shame to lose the security of an HA tenancy. Have you looked into transferring through the HA or into another HA? Some HAs run swap schemes with other HAs.

Being bankrupt doesn't exclude you from living where you want, you have not signed an undertaking to say you won't move, only that you will inform the OR of any change in circimstances. You're not expected to put your life on hold for the 3 years of an IPA, which is why it can be altered at any time.Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0

Emma,
Ignore the nasty post above. I've just logged on after pulling an all-nighter to get some work finished and they seem to be splattered all over this page of the board, though some appear to have been pulled. Don't take it personally, it's on several threads. Peachy's advice is usually rock solid. All I'd say is do explore transfer options too, if there are any available. I know HAs are under more pressure now than they used to be but the security is unparalleled.

Have you looked into Local housing allowance/ Housing Benefit if you rent privatly? I moved from a council flat (because of he area) into private rented and I only ended up paying the same as the council flat0

I agree with peachy. I was under the impression that the OR is there to administer whatever your situation is and deal with it accordingly. Same as if you decided to change your job, you wouldn't call the OR to ask if it was OK, only to notify them of any change of earnings. I could be very wrong though
Just to add my mom is a landlady, she has a couple of properties and let one out to someone who was bankrupt. He offered to pay the 6 months upfront and she agreed. Not all landlords/landladies will refuse you.

Thanks for all of the more constructive replies.
Thought about applying for a transfer Lily but all of the HA estates round here are pretty awul. I'm not too bothered but husband hates it where we are and is desperate to move.
Think I will get in touch with ORs office, the guy I deal with is usually pretty good at telling me what's what.
Hopefully it should be OK if going to claim a reasonable market rent for the area.
Tassotti, don't really understand the point you're trying to make but 2 local letting agencies have already said would rent to us no problem -obviously not everyone shares your views, would you like us tarred and feathered too?

I dont think so..I know this is the nicey niceyy forum for those who can't pay their debts, but as a LL and a moneylender, I think you have no chance.
Why would anyone give you a chance once you have borrowed money and not paid it back?
Just from a creditor? We still have to live you know?
If you'd really taken time to think about it you'd have realised that a bankrupt is a pretty safe bet for any LL. We have absolutely no debts hanging over us, our income is entirely our own. You could get someone with a glowing credit report who is in fact up to their eyeballs in debt and barely scrapping by and could default on the rent and any time. Now, which would you rather.
It's just as well there aren't too many narrowminded LL's out there like you.
But thanks for you input.Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0 -

peachy, excellent point well made! i do feel I need to add that those of us with IPAs don't quite get to enjoy spending all of our income. Still when I think of payments of £73 pcm rather than £567 pcm, I know who I'd rather have renting my property from me.BCSC Member 70:j
