How would you say would be the best way to get a quick small (maybe just a personal) loan of £400 and have it paid back within a month.

A bank overdraft will be the quickest and cheapest way - or even a cash advance on a credit card, although still expensive it is probably cheaper and quicker than trying to arrange a short term loan for such a small amount.

Most expensive would be 'pay day or doorstep loan'

Most banks will have a lower limit of £500 to a £1000 for personal loans.

Rafter's suggestion of an overdraft would be my advice too.

£400 is too little for them. £1000 to £15000 is Zopa's range.

I think Credit Union are the best bet, also their interest rate is very very low, you can read about them here: http://www.abcul.org/page/about/intro.cfm

I second this. I had a Standing order due out of my account, but no money to pay it.
called the debt recovery section of Nationwide, explained the situation and that I was expecting cash into my account within the fortnight.. They permitted the standing order to go through, didnt charge me! was totally amazing. Especially considering that I have a basic nationwide flexaccount with no overdraft facilities.

Be honest with your bank, dont speak to customer services but go to the real money men. They may help you out.
