Ring disaster

Hi everyone
I'm feeling really stressed and down today, as I picked my ring up yesterday and it's awful.
My local jeweller designed it to fit around my awkward shaped engagement ring and then sent it to be cast in 18ct gold. When he started polishing it he discovered the casting had gone wrong and the gold is pitted - it's really noticeable and there's nothing he can do because the pitting is all the way through, not just on the surface.
He said he will refund my deposit, but that still leaves me without a ring and only 4 1/2 weeks to go! I'll never find anyone else to make me one in that time. I'm so disappointed

can't you buy one to use for the wedding and then get a better one afterwards?0

Why can't he remake it? Or are you not happy in case it happens again...?
Do you live anywhere near Birmingham or London, as their jewellry quarters are really good & you may be able to get one made while you shop.0 -
Where do you live, what shape is the ring it has to fit round (post a link if poss) and how much are you wanting to spend?
Maybe one of us can help with finding something or someone to save the day.0 -
Just lost my post - aaargh!
Thanks for your replies.
To be brief
1. I really wanted the ring I have on the day to be the one I wear forever
2. There isn't time to go through the whole process again and I'd be worried he would mess it up again
3. I could get to Hatton Gardens if necessary, but I'm just not sure anyone would have time to make me something
4. I live in Kent. My ring is diamond shaped so needs a sort of wishbone shape to fit around it, but it is a high setting and the ones I've seen in shops don't sit up high enough. I can spend up to £250 if I really have to!0 -
Why not call a couple in Hatton Garden & ask, then at least you would know..... or ask in your local jewellers shops for where they send their repairs to locally, as that may be another option..... or look at the online ring places - do a search on here for some suggested names.0

Dotty your jeweller needs to take up the pitted ring with the plating people. I know that he has offered to return your deposit - if I were you I would refuse to pay for the ring in its current state and ask for the deposit to be returned.
Can the jeweller not loan you a ring for the actual day until he makes a new one and gets it plated properly?
Do as others have suggested and contact a couple of jewellers in Hatton Garden to see if they can make one or at least sell you one that fits - you never know they may have wishbone shaped rings in stock.0 -
hi there
just to let you know that you aren't alone and not to panic. My wedding ring was being made for me and with 10 days to go, still hadn't arrived.
Like you, I didn't want to use a different ring and change it over - as the blessing was important to me. My plan therefore was that I would use my engagement ring as my wedding ring if the wedding ring hadn't turned up in time...in the end it arrived just in time.
Good luck with your hunt. I really would suggest going somewhere like hatton garden and seing what another jeweller can do for you.
good luck xr.mac, you are so wise and wonderful, that post was lovely and so insightful!0 -
'Amulet' make shaped wedding rings and also can offer a same day service for certain shapes (I guess the easier ones, yours should be one). He is based in Hampshire, I have heard of someone going there first thing in the morning, finalising the details/getting the e-ring cast, going out for the day somewhere local (plenty to do) then picking the wedding ring up at the end of the day. The website has all details and some prices on. Eg: A custom shaped wedding ring 2mm in 9ct white gold £150-£220.

I know it's not local to you but maybe worth a day out if you end up getting the ring you want, and made in time too. If he can't do a same day service, he will most likely be able to do it in the timescale you have anyway.
When I was looking for a shaped ring to fit round my awkward engagement ring, I remember I saw lots of workshops and independent jewellers to make custom shaped rings in the timescale you have, a few internet searches will give you a few to look into. In the end I hated all the shaped rings and the nicer ones were out of my price range, and am getting a very narrow band to fit underneath my e-ring rather than shaped to it, meaning it won't look odd if for any reason I need to wear it on it's own (my mum and sister had to remove their e-rings when pregnant but their wed-rings were ok on).
I know its upsetting but you really do have time to sort it out if you get onto it right away.0 -
Thanks for all the suggestions. I'm going to ring a few places and also go to some more jewellers on Saturday and keep fingers crossed that I can get something sorted. I'll keep you posted.

Hi Dotty,
A wishbone ring is really not very difficult to adapt and should be able to be done in a day...Hatton Garden is def. the place to go as it is full of the best jewellery designers and merchants in the world. My uncle got my rings from there a year ago (as he's a diamond merchant) and had them re-sized immediately as we live in Scotland and couldn't wait!
Don't let them give you any rubbish about needing to pay a premium just because you want it done quickly...your time scale is very standard (4 weeks).
Have a fantastic time!
