Tax Query

in Cutting tax
Morning all. I have a quick query regarding Tax.
I currently have two jobs. I'm temping during the day, and am being paid weekly. My tax code for this is BD
I also work part time some evenings in a bar, again I'm paid weekly. The tax code for this is 543L W1, does anyone know what I should be paying, as my day job payslip looked fine, but my evening one showed no tax.
These are my first jobs since the begining of the tax year, as I was still living in Thailand until June.

There is no such code as BD, I think this should be BR.
We would need to know your actual gross earnings from both jobs in order to help. Also, how long were you out of the UK for and have you returned permanently?£705,000 raised by client groups in the past 18 mths :beer:0 -
You're right, yes it's BR - typing error, sorry.
I'm temping during the day on £6.50 per hour, working 35 hours per week and my evening job is £5.52 per hour, and the hours are unset so range between 9 - 18 usually.
Yes I'm permenantly back in the UK and was only away 3 months.Fantastic Expectations Amazing Revelations0 -
Your code numbers are the wrong way round. Easiest way to sort it is to ring your tax office (the one which deals with your temping agency) and explain the situation. Ask them to allocate your tax free allowances to your temp job and code BR to the evening job. They will also want a form P86 concerning your return to the UK and details of any overseas earnings as these will be taxable.£705,000 raised by client groups in the past 18 mths :beer:0

Thank you for this. What will the change be then? Am I paying too much or too little?

The 543L code should be attached to the job where you are earning most - in this case your 35hr job. At the moment your evening job, even at 18hrs per week, is less than your personal allowance so you are not getting the full benefit of your tax-free allowances.
At the moment you are probably paying a bit too much tax overall.0 -
Thanks - Im on hold to them now, and have been for the last 15 minutes! Great way to spend my lunch break :TFantastic Expectations Amazing Revelations0

I've spoken to the Tax office, and they do have my codes the wrong way round. They've have changed them round, but have done this on a weekly/monthly basis, as Jobcentre have not sent a P45 (I was signed on for 4 weeks, and can't believe how rubbish the Jobcentre actually are) I can't have it done on a yearly basis, until I get this and send it to them.
I didn't have to pay tax whilst I was away, as you're allowed a break apparently, and I wasn't working in Thailand either.Fantastic Expectations Amazing Revelations0 -

Try and chase this up - you won't get any overpayment back until you are not on Wk/Mth1 basis.0 -
I arrived home tonight and found my P45 from the Jobcentre - great timing! It's enveloped up, so I'll post it tomorrow, and hopefully things should be sorted proper soon!
Thanks for the posts!Fantastic Expectations Amazing Revelations0
