went to our weekly market yesterday to buy a pumpkin for Halloween thinking you can't get much more seasonal than that so it should be cheap.

almost twice the price of the ones in Sainsburys!

Key word seasonal, I'd put money on them being more in Sainsbury's tomorrow.
  • I buy all my fruit and veg in sainsburys we do have a greengrocers in town, but all the food is manky and highly priced the local farmers market is also well over priced, I wish we had some good quality cheap places to buy, but unfortunately that isn't the case.
I go over to an auctions about 20miles away once every 2 months and the market there sells unbelievably cheap friut and veg , I can get a large box of apples (20 + apples) for 1.49 cauli for 25p broc for 15p bananas about 6p eachits great I just wish I lived closer, the quality is'nt always fantastic, but I freeze as much as possible so it lasts. Plus everything else is mega cheap too a dozen organic duck or hens eggs for £1.50 meat is also really cheap, plus theres a stall selling mega cheap cakes & bisquits, most of them are very nearly out of date but at 25p for a pack of mr kiplings vienise whirls,I will never complain.
I love going there and grabbing all the bargains, plus the auction is really cheap as well, only the really really nice stuff will sell for more than a fiver, I once came back with 6 14in tvs 4 vcrs a dvd player a mini kenwood stereo a tent and a solid pine bedside table for £7 I couldn't believe it, I sold the tvs &vcrs for a tenner each and kept the rest for myself.

CRIKEY That is absolutely the last timeI try our local market for fruit and veg.

Went yesterday filled with good intentions andfeeling all smug about saving more moeny. BITTERLY dissapointed I can tell you.

4lb of golden delicious apples (bruised) £1.84 (£1.76 in tesco)

2 iceburg lettuces £1.10 came plastic wrapped and were quite small (88p in tesco)

3 peppers £1.30 (£1.68 in tesco but far better quality)

4lbs mushies £1.30 these really were lovely quality so I would say on a par with tesco

    5 oranges £1.30 (95p in tesco)

I will now give the greengroce rin town (didnt know we had one till today)a try next week to be fair but wont be market shopping again. I really prefer to pick my own.

Tell you what though, itreally doesmake me desperate for my house to sell so we can get a big garden with room for a vege plot :D
