Suggestions to explain gap in employment history?

I am in the process of applying for a job, and as I was made redundant in April and not worked since, I obviously have a short gap in my work history.

Now, what can I put to explain this (they want to know about any gaps?) I have two kids but in all honesty I'd rather not put anything referring to having children, and I've really spent my time at home with them before the oldest goes to school.

Any suggestions?

family break would be quite acceptavle, imo.

try saying spent time ding some foreign trvel, DIY / charity projects etc..

though some may need a baclstory, and/or proof!

    Inventive, I like it! :D

I think I'm just a bit paranoid about saying I have kids. Mind you, it's an NHS job so maybe I shouldn't worry so much as they're supposed to be v. family friendly.

I'm going to email the application in the morning so going to have a little think about it!

Why not just tell them the truth?

Tell the truth - spent some quality time with children and now feel ready, energised / refreshed to go back to employment.

    No harm in that

I agree! It's a very short break, and you were made redundant, so presumably got some redundancy pay. You could say that you used this money to do some private studying or pursue a personal interest for a short while. Or you could make it clear that you did not want to rush into a new job, you are very fussy, and you are only applying to these new people because you like them/their company so much!

I have thought about it and I think the idea of a 'break with the children' actually doesn't sound as bad as I worried about!

It hasn't been long, the oldest is starting school in September and I took the opportunity whilst I could to spend a bit of time with them. I was working four days a week in my last job and felt like I didn't spend much time with them :(

The job is with the NHS so maybe I'm overly worrying anyway about their reaction to me having kids. I'm going to finish the application now and send it off!

Your next job will more than likely want references from your previous employer.

If it was me i would use the 3 month trip to Australia seeing family excuse.

I wouldn't use children as an example, it's not a strong enough excuse and if i were an employer i would be asking...Will she feel the urge to do this again?

The family in Australia is far stronger, the child excuse just shows you were unemployed and using them as an excuse.

Well that's my view on it anyway :)

You are better to tell them that you were made redundant (not your fault) and that you decided to wait until your children went to school in September before looking for alternative work. This is very acceptable and they are more worried about people with years gap than a few months.
