Unix's wedding diary (questions please help!)

Hi All, my partner and I got engaged in February and were going to marry this year however due to illness it wasn't possible. We've decided on next August (2009) and want to marry on a monday (it falls on a special date for us).
I know not many people might be interested reading yet another diary but I just had to share as at least here I can't vent (if I need to)
We're still looking for a venue, so if anyone knows of a good cheap venue in central Scotland (preferably closer to Glasgow) then please let me know. I had my heart set on a certain hotel just off the M74 and they quoted me 12000! I haven't been through their quote properly yet as I know they quoted for a saturday when I specifically said a monday. So I'll let you know how I get on.
I got my dress, and that was a story and a half! I'll post that shortly.

Thank guys and there was me thinking (after getting a few strange looks from neighbours etc) that getting married on a monday was strange!
I still need a bit of help with a cheaper venue, so if anyone knows of one near Glasgow let me know!
Now the dress, originally I'd set my heart on a dress on ebay

I thought it was totally different and the reason I'm posting the link is they have other lovely dresses and am still considering getting my bridesmaid dress there (I'm open to suggestions as well). Hopefully if there's any other bride's to be out there then this might be of use to them too. But fate intervened and I ended up in Blackpool for a few days and went to a shop called Extasy (I think that's the correct spelling), not sure of the name of the road, its on the same street as Steals (discount clothing place for labels kind of like TK Maxx).
The shop don't keep many wedding dresses ( I thought) as most of the stock she has out is clubbing gear, evening dresses and prom dresses and killer heels (5 inch heels  , better not get those I'd be taller than my OH). I'd seen a dress (wedding) in the window and asked if I could try it on. She asked my size then went to get one from the stock room upstairs. The dress she came back with wasn't the one I asked for but I fell in love with it when I saw it. Its perfect. I ended up in tears in the shops and Mum was too (I don't think she thought I'd ever settle down). Not wanting to mention too many details as OH lurks here now and again, but I got the dress for 180 pounds (includes a silk matching shawl) so not too bad and a lot less than I'd seen similar dresses in actual wedding shops.
The one thing I'm quickly learning is that mention "Wedding" and they add a few zeros onto the price. Not fair is it?
A neighbour is getting married next week and they casually mentioned how much the wedding was costing them (15 thousand!), ok I know its a special day but they're paying for it themselves and are barely covering their bills as it is. I don't think I'd be able to sleep running up that much debt for one day. Am I alone in feeling like this? I know I want my day to be special but (and I haven't read a lot of threads on weddings yet) from readings stuff on here I know its possible to have the best day and for it not to cost the earth.CC2 = £8687.86 ([STRIKE]£10000[/STRIKE] )CC1 = £0 ([STRIKE]£9983[/STRIKE] ); Reusing shopping bags savings =£5.80 vs spent £1.05.Wine is like opera. Hi unix, congratulations, here are some venue ideas:
Eastwood House - scroll down to download leaflet
Pollockshields Burgh Hall
Glasgow City Council venues - more expensive if you mention the 'w' word!
Strathclyde University
Glasgow University
Another thread about wedding venues in and around Glasgow
We stuck to the cities when looking at wedding venues, we've ended up booking a hall in Edinburgh which is very reasonable, got to bring caterers in etc but that's fine. Why not try village halls as well? I seem to remember there's a nice one in New Lanark.Got married 23rd May 2009, many thanks to all on the Weddings and Anniversaries board for their help and support!

MsChazzer, I thought you could only get married at Glasgow university if you graduated from there?CC2 = £8687.86 ([STRIKE]£10000[/STRIKE] )CC1 = £0 ([STRIKE]£9983[/STRIKE] ); Reusing shopping bags savings =£5.80 vs spent £1.05.Wine is like opera. Ah, you may be right, it just says 'wedding receptions' doesn't it so they may not be licensed. They might have a chapel that graduates can get married in. Sorry, didn't look properly, the universities through in Edinburgh are licensed so I just assumed Glasgow was. You would probably be able to have a Humanist ceremony as it's the celebrant who is licensed not the premises, same goes for religious weddings too if that's what you want, you'd need to check with your place of worship. Doesn't seem to suggest this though does it so maybe they don't encourage it.Got married 23rd May 2009, many thanks to all on the Weddings and Anniversaries board for their help and support!

Have you tried the Lodge on Loch Lomond?? Gorgeous views, great food and staff and (I hear) very reasonable for a wedding probably even more so for a Monday.
Congrats and good luck
