seaniboy wrote:highlighter the logic is right but it dont always come down to that, ok i will come to yours take all your TV's for 80 days see how isolated you feel, putting £2 away in a box is no good if you need say nappies, extra electric tokens as its winter before payday/giro day, inevitably that 80 days becomes more......
No one has to be without TV you can get one from E-bay for next to nowt. But oh no they want the best on the market.
If people are to bad off to buy nappies then you shouldn't have the kids to start with, or maybe use terry nappies.
But I suppose £2 a day is nothing compared to going down the pub each night spending £20 on drink and chips, feeding the bandit with £10 and smoking two packs of fags a day.
Still if you go to the pub at night you can watch the telly there..... or get a cheap one off the back of a lorry as they say.

colin_tomlinson wrote:Just to clarify, does a cooker and washing machine constitute a necessity? What about a fridge-freezer?
Depends.
A cooker is useful to have and if you have other means to cook e.g microwave etc then having one is not necessity. I have a slow cooker and electric steamer, So could go without a cooker.
A washing machine nice to have, a pain in the bum if you don't have one, taking to the laundrette. But you can still get your washing done and what if you lived in a studio flat and had no room. No choice.
Fridge freezer nice to have. A bit of pain with out one. I lived two weeks with out one before moving. And it just meant that I had to buy fresh veg ever few days. No chilled drinks and milk would not keep. But guess what my life went on.
With the above including a TV, with out you are not going to die. But with out clothes or shelter it makes life very difficult and with out food and water you are going to die.
So you tell me what a person with out shelter, clothes and food would want. The basics or a fridge/freezer, Cooker, washing or TV. Ummmm that is such a hard one to work out.
Sorry in most first world countries if you don't have a up to date mobile or a 42" telly you are seen as poor. Nah sorry but I am the rich one as I don't feel the need to keep up with everyone else, new telly every few months and new mobile etc, etc, etc. And in normal size room have you seen how hideous a 42" screen telly looks. Tacky is the only word I can think.
But then each to there own. I know what I would rather have a paid off mortgage quicker or a 42" telly. oh that is such a tough choice
And to think we are worrying about if someone can afford to buy a telly. And just recently some people have nothing but the clothes they stand up in. After natural diasters. Maybe we should count are blessings. I know I do.

Back to the topic. I do agree that doorstep lenders should be shot. As they pray on the weak and sometimes the uneducated but also people who have no where else to turn.
That is why credit unions where created.
I believe that govt. Should make every town and city have a credit union as it would allow people to borrow money at a reasonable rate.
And layaway is such a great idea, If a country like the US have it I can't see why more places don't do it in the uk. I did this when I was at school many moons ago for a book. I could pay for it over a couple of months. It was great I got a book and did not have spend all my dinner money on it and go with out lunch that day.

thats a hell of a generalisation about low income households
what about the single parent working part time with tax credits still on the poverty line?
I know one woman in this situation this who pays full legal costs as under Legal Aid rules she is exempt and has thousands to pay for solicitors for keeping her violent "pub each night spending £20 on drink and chips, feeding the bandit with £10 and smoking two packs of fags a day" ex away from her while he gets full legal aid for every breach of the restraining orders etc.....
what about single people on minimium wage working 40hrs £202.00 before deductions, paying full rent & council tax, gas &/or electric, travel costs to work do you think they have a disposible income where cheaper alternative credit companies take them on?
its is people like this who are vunerable to these credit cowboysIf I helped or saved you money - Thank me

i agree but we have all created a society for keeping up with the jonses, indeed in true testiment this site inadvertadly promotes it - "grab it while you can" (albiet cheaper than the jonses paid!)
and funny enough who created the "have it now"?

uneducated, dyslexic, bad eye sight, or absolutely nothing wrong with the customer....is there not a duty to verbally explain the credit agreement?
I have always had someone verbally go through the credit agreement terms of payment at that companies insistance making sure i fully understood my obligations.
Surely thats a condition of holding a credit licence? If I helped or saved you money - Thank me

I have every admiration for folk like her who are trying to make something of their life, even more for getting rid of the ex
But I think we are getting away from the subject of rip off firms charging sky high fee's
