I cant bear to do all the maths to work mine out but wanted to add a couple of ideas to this thread as I am trying to have a really frugal month. I have been making pasta salad with value pasta, sweetcorn and tinned tomatoes.
I made the coconut cake from here...
http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showpost.html?p=12173419&postcount=58
....and cut it up into lunchbox portions, wrapped it in clingfilm and froze it - stops me eating it all at once!
My other failsafe has been tinned pineapple. I got a really big tin in Lidl for about 40p and have been having a few spoonfuls for lunch each day.
If anyone else has any cheap fruit ideas I'd love to know them, I'm not that keen on apples or bananas, unfortunately I love berries, melon, mango - all the expensive ones!0 -

I did this for a couple of months to record the cost of 2 packed lunches for ds1 &2 against the cost of school dinners (£2 each per day). On average the packed lunches cost £1.20 per day for the 2, saving £2.80 each day.
I didn't cost up leftovers though - if it came from last night's dinner or a restaurant, I counted it as effectively free - and only costed the extra ingredients added.
About a month ago I got two boxes in Tesco really cheaply - they have two compartments separated by a removable freezer pack - good for salads. I used the savings from the first month of packed lunches to buy wide necked thermoses - the boys love leftover chilli with some tortilla chips - I also fit jacket spuds in in the winter.“the princess jumped from the tower & she learned that she could fly all along. she never needed those wings.”

Anyone mind if I bump? With a lot of southern schools returning this week, peeps might find this thread useful.
I have to admit to not costing up anything apart from the actual items I intend buying in the first place, but a couple of days ago I bought a reduced :j joint of pork. It has been roasted, sliced, bagged into four lots & frozen with the sole intention of using as sandwich filler...well 3 lots are frozen & one is in use. I've often wondered about doing this before but never got around to it till I found

And here is a thread on sandwich fillers

I'm pretty certain there's another one somewhere, plus Weezl's threads of course, with the truly lush pate recipes in particular.Full time Carer for Mum; harassed mother of three;loving & loved by two 4-legged babies.

I did a bit of very quick maths today, after weighing the meat I managed to salvage from a fresh turkey thigh joint & a forgotten frozen MrT gammon.
Both joints were around £4:50 each & I've allowed a generous £1 to cover the cooking, foil, plastic bags etc etc, not forgetting cook's perks of a wee taster& the scubbl little crumbs you get when you carve...Actually I borrowed me muvva's electric slicer :j so that is in the 'fuel' bit too.
The final talley of sliced meat is 500g turkey & 900g gammon, so 1.4 kilo of unadulterated meat for approx 71.4p per 100g.....not that bad m'thinxFull time Carer for Mum; harassed mother of three;loving & loved by two 4-legged babies.
