Ear wax - olive oil ????

Please, does anyone know the answer:

Is it okay to pour warmed extra virgin olive oil in hubbies ears to loosen ear wax?

Thanks

Its usually recommended by Doctors as the best thing to soften it, before they can syringe it out.

My doctor recommends a week to make sure the syringer works.

I heat a tea spoon with hot water, let the oil warm there for a few seconds and tip it in, then stagger to the sofa with my head on one side and lie there for a while so it can get in and work. Looks very silly but seems to do the trick!

My son has bad ear wax and I have been told by the Doctor to put in 2 drops in his ear, tilt to one side for 10 mins, then do the other side.

  • My left ear was totally blocked with wax. It was so annoying, felt much worse than 50% loss and very disorienting.

Anyway, back to the question. When I went to my GP he recommend the olive oil trick - a couple of drops in the ear, lie sideways with that ear facing up to the ceiling for 10 mins or so to let the oil be absorbed.

I was supposed to this for a week and he had booked in to get my ears "syringed". I only did it about 3 times and it didn't seem to help. I think it was really just to soften the wax anyway.

Then I saw the nurse at the GP practice who used some sort of hose to "syringe" the wax out. Took about 10 secs. I was so thankful to get full hearing back.

So if he hasn't already I'd recommend seeing the GP/nurse.
