How quickly do you need it? Many people here use pre-paid credit cards (Cashplus is maybe the most popular). You get a Mastercard or a Visa, but rather than getting credit, you have to top it up with cash. As long as you have put enough on for what you want, it functions like a normal credit card. But it can take up to two weeks to come through from first application. BL0

Most pre-pay credit cards apart from the cashplus card (someone correct me if i'm wrong!) your unable to use for car hire.....the cashplus card you need to contact them to activate the function on the card then your able to use for car hire.....but as BL said depends how quickly you need it although if you have Money shops or cash converters you can buy the cards over the counter without the wait...

According to this article the "sterling card" does allow you to hire cars as well but don't know anything about that particular card... so if someone has one it'd be interesting to hear if it does indeed work

There is also an old thread on the travel site - it may be worth you doing a search. The the OP did find some companies who would hire without a credit card.0

http://valuecarrentals.com/Do I need to have a credit card? What are my payment options?
You can pay Value Car Retals for your booking on most major credit cards and debit cards. Value Cars does not charge any additional fees for credit or debit card transactions. However, be sure to check the terms and conditions of each supplier about their specific credit card policies. Although you can pay us with a debit card, local suppliers require you to have a credit card or they will not rent a car to you. If you are not sure about this, click on the more info on the car results page of this website. Our site will list the credit card policies there. We all die. So that's me learned something too! Glad I didn't turn up at Avis or whoever months down the line cheerily brandishing my Cashplus... BL0
