Pension advice and part time work...

Hello....I'm after some advice please....

I work for a University and have been paying into a 'Local Governmnet Pension Scheme' (LGPS) for around 8 years. I make a 6% contribution into the scheme (£127 a month) and my employer tops this up to £383 a month. I understand that this is quite a good pension scheme and as such I have a couple of questions regarding my impending change of circumstances:

In a few month I will be going part-time in a role reversal with my wife whereby I will look after our children and work part-time (She will be earning more than me so it makes financial sense). When I go part time would it be better to increase the level of contributions I make in order to keep the pension as high as possible? Or would it be better to take out another private pension (if that is possible)?......Which brings me on to the next point: If I have to leave this company in order to go part-time, what would be the best course of action to take with my current pension?....freeze it, cash it in, transfer it ????

Sorry for my ignorance as far as pensions go....I always knew it was important to have one, but never really took the time to understand what is going on !!!!
