Please be careful as cheap suitcases can sometimes be a false economy.

The first cheap case I bought lost the wheel on the way to the airport (the first very time I used it) and I had to lug the thing about for hours.

The second cheap case I bought came down the luggage belt with the zip burst and I lost most of my belongings , which was a nightmare start to my holiday.

If your not going to use them for airport travel where they get seriously abused then a budget set should be ok.

Hardcase Samsonite for me now everytime :)

Whats the best type of suitcase for maximising your baggage allowance - I always worry hard case ones weigh more than soft sided ?

Beware the large suitcase (66x44x21cms) is not what I would consider large!

    e.g. 55cm x 40cm x 20cm is Ryanair's CABIN baggage allowance! (just a tiny bit smaller)

The hard case type do weigh more yes, but I always manage to bring mine home full to the brim and still scrape through the weight limit. I would rather have a heavier case and the peace of mind that it will stay intact.
When you think of all your new expensive clothes and holiday purchases it does make sense to protect them.

I recommend Samsonite they really can take a beating. (We have 3 hard case versions) .Nothing inside has ever broken, and they are waterproof.

Their customer care is excellant to . I had a lock crack after 4 or 5 years of travelling (but it still stayed locked) , one phone call and a free replacement lock arrived in 2 days.

I have just looked up my cases and was shocked at the prices now, they are all over £100, which is alot of money. I suppose you have to look at it as an investment. If you fly often then they are well worth it.
