Appliance energy consumption

I've got to replace my dishwasher and hi-fi soon (the dishwasher is still just about working, although it is nearly as old as I am ;) ), but the hi-fi is dead and I have no idea whether I can fix it (could I have killed it by switching it off at the mains rather than leaving it on standby?). :o

When I've been looking at dishwashers, there's plenty of information about energy efficiency, delayed starts for E7 users, water consumption etc.

Does anyone know of a site where you can find out energy consumption for hi-fi equipment in different modes (stand-by, on, on and working), and whether they can actually be switched off without losing all the presets? Is there a site for home electronics equivalent to the EPEAT one for computers?

If I have to buy something new I'd like to go for something energy efficient - and on the assumption that it will probably cost a bit more, I reckon that by working out the lifetime cost, the low-energy consumption should make it better value overall :D
