Idea: Using Argos catalogues to pay your mortgage...

This is gonna seem really crazy..
I have just seen a 30 year old Argos catalogue on ebay for £75 and suddenly realised that if I'd collected enough of them (845 to be exact) in the 70's I could pay off my mortgage in full!!
That got me thinking...
Instead of taking out an endowment, modern day house buyers should simply fill their lofts with Argos books! 25 years down the road they could sell 'em and use the proceeds to pay off the mortgage!!
The beauty is that Argos catalogues are free, ie no investment is needed and also insulate your loft, saving on gas bills!
Sure, you'd need to make sure they were dry, didn't catch fire and mice didn't nest in them but it'd probably be a more secure investment than ploughing lots of money into and endowment policy!
On a serious note, should interest only mortgage customers be looking at 'alternative' investments to pay off their loans?

I wonder if it would work with other catalogues too? Littlewoods, Freemans etc. There's bound to be lots of fashion student types who would want to study them in 30 years time?;)
That's it! I'm off to Argos

With the size of these things now, you could probably build a house using them, and it would be better quality than some new builds, especially sound insulation!
I would not have thought loft insulation was an option as they would crash through the roof due to their crazy weight!
seriously though ... daft idea!!0 -

Just dropped the new one on my toe - it hurt!"You were only supposed to blow the bl**dy doors off!!"0 -
Don't you just look at some things before you throw them out - and wonder if they'll be worth a fortune one day?
I'm sure I'm not the only one. The only thing that stops me is the thought of a house full of junk. Hmm ... if only we could see into the future

Check out ebay item: 270258042388. According to Wikipedia "Green Shield" were rebranded "Argos" in 11973, so it would have been the first catalogue: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Argos_%28retailer%29
As an aside, it mentions that Argos have dropped the "Elizabeth Duke" brand, as of the latest catalogue! The end of an era!0 -
Its not selling for £75, it just has a silly starting price. 0
