Mortgage while on a contract?

Hi there
You've been so helpful with my queries, that I thought I'd post another!
I am a teacher, about to start a 1 year contract. It occurs to me, that this might be a problem to a mortgage company - what do other contract workers do? I am hoping I'll have my contract made permanent, but it's possible the school will just roll it on for another year (falling rolls mean I may not be needed at some future point!) Do high street lenders lend to contract workers, or people who do teaching supply work and are essentially self-employed?

I'm on a short term contract, and HSBC said they would give me a mortgage (for more than I could safely afford to repay!!!), so it might be worth asking them?Live on £11k in 20110

Some lenders will and some will not
