Import Tax/Duty Question...

Hi all
I am wanting to buy some stuff from the states. Some of it I can get in the UK but there is not as much choice and also the cost is much higher. I can buy the items much cheaper from the USA and even with import duty/tax (not sure of the correct term?) I think it will work out better value. What I am wanting to know is where can I find out the rates they will charge if customs decide to investigate my deliveries? If the stuff gets through customs without charge then great but, I would like to be prepared and to budget for the likelihood it will get stopped and a charge will be levied before I decide where to order from.
Can anyone tell me where to look...? Thanks

PS: Its nothing dodgy - just a kiln and some flameworking equipment and glass!
