When a DCA Cannot Do Basic Maths

We had a joint account which was sent to a DCA in November 2002 (after my husband got into some financial difficulty. I never ever used the account).

Anyway, when it reached the DCA it was £3798 overdrawn. I have being paying it since March 2003 at £50 per month.

I wrote to them recently offering £250 as a FULL anD FINAL payment. They refused saying the balance is £980, however they will accept £660. The remaining balance is only £650!!!

I have a letter from the Bank, dated August 2007, saying the balance is £1270 (give or take the pennies). I have made 11 payments since then so therefore the balance will be reduced by 11x£50 (no interest is being accrued - fought that battle and won a couple of years ago).

Phoned them yesterday and this is what they told me:

(1) Agent on the phone agreed original debt was £3798;
(2) Amount already paid £3441;
(3) No interest has ever been added;
(4) Amount outstanding £980; how - asked her to do the basic maths on everything she agreed.

Its frightening that these people and computer systems cannot do the basic maths:):)

Have asked for statements etc

    request a copy of the account statement to make sure there haven't been any additional charges made. Not much else you can do , but at least you should be able to see if it is an admin error or if something else has happened.

    Apologies

    Just realised you have replied to this.

    I have written to them again, requesting copies of all statements and payments. Have also asked for a Full and Final settlement to allow me to be rid of them once and forever.

    Will be iteresting to see the statements. They definitely agreed the figures over the phone.

    If they don't produce the statements and insist you need to pay £10 for this (a subject access request), i'd request a copy of the CCA with statement of account and notice of assignment (£1). I'm sure they'll soon be willing to make a F&F - but make sure you are getting the better end of the deal.
