Extra oven shelves to cook more at one time?

As my oven is fan assisted would it make sense to get another shelf or two so when making biscuits/traybakes etc. I can cook more at one time, or wouldn't the heat circulate properly?

Also... where to get them from, the original manufacturer's ones cost £26 plus delivery *cough splutter*. There are some adjustable ones in the Betterware catalogue for only £6.99 but it's not clear whether they will fix into the size/position once adjusted iyswim... I wouldn't want to knock it and have it collapse on me!

Any comments/advice welcome.

Make your own Pot Noodles using a flower pot, sawdust and some old shoe laces. Pour in boiling water, stir then allow to stand for two minutes before taking one mouthful, and throwing away. Just like the real thing!

Adjustable pizza trays ( shelves ) from Home Bargains are under a fiver , fit all ovens and have a perforated base .

  • I have a double oven and often use the shelf from the top/ grill when cooking. do you have a friend with a oven the same width as you borrow one and if it fits ask on freecycle to see if any one is getting rid or do you have a local council dump they are not supposed to but some times the lads will give you what you need especially if you give them some beer money that is how my mam got a jam pan
  • Why not ask on freecycle. Maybe someone has a dead oven, but you could get the shelves. I'm assuming ovens are a standard size.

Edit; Belt tightener, it looks like I've just repeated you, but it's just that I'm so slow at typing.

It's best to measure the width of one of the existing shelves before asking - some ovens are wider than others. I found that to my cost when buying baking trays recently - the first couple that I bought were way too wide and had to go back for an exchange.

    Thanks all for the replies.

I asked in a charity shop a few months ago and do keep popping back but I think they forget. I've never looked at freecycle... as I haven't got a car I kind of thought that there wouldn't be a lot of point... one of my friends uses it quite a bit so I'll mention it to her.

I haven't got a Home Bargains near me (more's the pity), nor a Lakeland.

How long do traybaked things keep for anyway? As there's only me I wouldn't want to make 50 portions only for them to go bad after a fortnight.

  • Hiya,

I have the Betterware one's, they're great. There's 4 small screws on the underside of the shelf. I took my existing one out of the oven, made the Betterware one the same size and then tightened the screws. They're on the main front and back struts, IYKWIM, and they just tighten against the sliding bit, there's no holes, so its really adjustable.

    Wholeheartedly recommended.

Thanks Paulie'sGirl. That settles it, I'll just get a couple of them and stop dallying about. I'm sure they'll pay for themselves fairly quickly anyway at the rate energy prices are shooting up.

have a look at the wire mesh cake cooling trays or racks in hardware stores.

I use one as an extra oven shelf in my fan oven, it's a bit lightweight but fine for light stuff
