Sainsbury's credit card

Have one of these on order and intend to buy a car on it (c. £6000). But dealer tells me if I buy by credit card I will pay 2% extra. That's a hefty £120 and defeats the whole object of being able to get a year's free interest period. Can anyone suggest a means of getting round this somehow?

I think you can tell the dealer (politely ;)) that you will walk away from the deal unless they absorb the 2% into the original selling price.
If I was a dealer, I would try to get the 2% back (which they have to pay for the CC transaction), but may relent under pressure.
My general rule of thumb is that you can get 10% off the list price of a car by haggling.
After all, it's a buyer's market.0 -
Certainly haggle, but if the dealer knows you are paying by credit card you won't get as good a deal.
If you want to put it on a 0% credit card then you need an SBT card. Transfer money from your card to your bank and then you can pay by cheque/debit card or whatever.
See here for the SBT explanation.0 -
It is not for nothing that it is called a Super Balance Transfer................................I have put my clock back....... Kcolc ym0

The dealer will have to pay a commission to his bank to accept your credit card. This commission would not be charged if you paid by switch or cash, so it is an additional expense and it's fair for the dealer to add it to the purchase price. Still paying £120 for a 1 year £6k loan isn't bad - interest on a 1 year £6k UPL at 5.9% would cost around £177 in interest.0
