help on applying for a mortgage

:T good afternoon can any one help.my daughter and her partner aplied for a mortgage. this was agreed in principal.they put resevation fee down for new house and other costs total £1500. it was later refused, the cause, her credit rating. she checked and found rating ok. it was found to be a company called blackhorse with who she recently had car finance. she returned the car last april, paid £408 what was due, had not defaulted on any payments. this has been amended by the company.it wa put down as settled in nov. when the company resold the car. the forms for the mortgage where re submitted. she has again been refused, this time the grounds were they dont think they can afford the repayments.
why can they state this the second time, when it was not mentioned the first time.
my daughter is the mainlead on the application, as she earns more than her partner.
does this sound like discrimination? due to the fact she is female, and may decide in time to take time off work for children
also if this does not go ahead , can they make a claim for the costs they have paid out, as the mortgage was agreed in principal.
many thanks in anticipation
apologies for the lenghty post:j

I doubt very much that it is discrimination.
Can you give us more details?
How much do your daughter and her partner earn?
How much is the house they want to buy?
How much are they looking to borrow?
Do they have any other outgoings, like loans or credit card repayments?

Lenders have been tightening up their criteria during the credit crunch, so it's possible there was an internal policy change between the two applications.
No.does this sound like discrimination?
Everyone is being treated harshly as there is a big credit crunch on.
Sorry she's been treated harshly but she is not being singled out.
Unlikely IMO, but you can't just invent reasons like that, you would need proof before making an allegation e.g. an identical application by a male that was accepted.due to the fact she is female, and may decide in time to take time off work for children
Clearly an identical aplication with identical credit record is impossible.
Probably not.also if this does not go ahead , can they make a claim for the costs they have paid out, as the mortgage was agreed in principal.
Agreements in principle are always subject to numerous things (like credit checks).
Most likey it's jsut the credit crunch.0
