Empty Cupboards

We are moving out on Sept 10th and we will be doing a mixture of going on holiday, staying in spare rooms and house sitting so I want to empty the freezer and cupboards.
Tonight Im going to make a list of everything we have then work out how to make it in to meals and what I need to buy with Augusts budget.

Any tips or ideas would be great!

We also found when we moved last that as well as trying to use as much up as possible you have to give consideration to what actually isn't worth the hassle - it's not worth using something up if it will cost you most in buying additional ingredients to go with it than the items was worth in the first place and if it wouldn't form part of your normal diet. Ie - buying a bar of chocolate to make cakes to use up flour - all well and good if you would eat the cakes normally, but otherwise it makes more sense to throw away the flour.

Good point thankyou will have to consider that I really want to spend as little as possible on extras apart from veg and fruit etc. I think there will be a few bits left herbs spices and some tins etc left over but as my poor mum will have her spare room cramed full of our stuff as it is so dont want there to be
    too much

OMG!!!!! this is practically identical to the stuff in my cupbaords!! the half jar of tahini, the dipping sauce! SO I guess Im helping us both here I really have to drill my cupbaords down for non spending reasons. Lets see what I can do - i seem to have good ideas for others but end up starign at it all for me so here goes!

the key is think of using the freezer stuff first. Theres no way youll want to cart HM frozen meals from one house to another so rota those in first.

If either of you are at home in the lunchtime, or maybe a light sunday lunch type thing, Id drfost the mini quiche/ falafels/ mini sausages and have with a salad and the baguettes.

you also have souop & croutons for lunches ( not really the weather tho!)

the salmon portions could you glaze them with your honey then grill then have noodles stirfried with the oyster sauce & shredded veg using up the water chestnutrs etc. with the salmon on the top ( sort of thing) makes a really nince dinner I tihnk and not hard to make.

the pork in sauce you can have with brown rice, or the tinned new pots?

youve got portions of mash there and sausages theres a meal with sweetcorn?

Quorn mince ovbiously to make chili and spag bol - you have loads of tins of beansw too so I bet that was your tihnking- have with the baguetttes.

Make chicken skewers with the peanut dipping sauce, and maybe fried rice with a bit of veg?

the cook range cajun chicken, can you slice it afterwards once its cooked( is it the M&S onein sauce in a tray) and have in the fajita wraps- using the jalapenos too ? ( or at least some! )

You can use some of the veggie chili in the tacos kit - good film food.

I think the tomato chutney might be nice as used as a pizza base if you are looking to use it up? You could do baguette pizzas or im sure someone will tell you how to make a scone base using SR flour which youve got.

the jam you could make into a jam tartlette using the puff pastry? should be nice with some of that custard?

the balti paste is good as a marinade, you can use it on chicken thighs its really nice? then you can also, once they are part cooked, throw in some chopped tinned toms to the casseroling dish to have a sauce.

Sorry no idea on the matzos, but I suspect they might be good crumbled up and using as a crispy topping on a pasta bake? you have quite a bit of pasta  and quite a lot of matzos :D:D

quorn lasagne screams out as well - you can make the white sauce easily using flour, which youve got.

No idea what string hoppers are? Hope im not missing out!!

I really should take my own advice weve moved 5 times in the last 2 years and that half jar of tahini has come with us everytime:rolleyes:
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
    This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast

I love your ideas thank you; I have also found that I can use the kidney beans to make refried beans to go in the tacos

You are sooo missing out on the string hoppers (I think they are also known as rice noodles) I am not sure if you can get them in supermarkets but you can buy them in cash and carry/mini supermarket thingys. They are a light alternative to rice and cheap too. We plan to use them in a laksa (a noodle soup thing with chicken and it uses the coconut milk too)

I think im a bit stuck with the matzos but they are in date till late 09 I think. and the pasta, well hopefully it will last lol

Re the tahini - have you ever made your own humus? I think I might give it a try as I have the chickpeas too apparently the best recipes are ones using yoghurt of something similar to make it creamy

just a thought about the laska you can use fish as well we have it with prawns and do you intend on making the paste or do you intend on buying it.

the only reason i ask is because if you intend on making the paste i just want to point out that it is only red curry paste and depending on how spicy you like it add accordinly we have this often and i is very nice and very quick
    .
going to have a think about what else you have in but ill come back withsome ideas soon

pretz - we dont eat prawns but im sure its lovely for those that like them.
My bf is the one who makes it and I have just asked about the paste. He said he uses ginger, garlic, and chili normally and what ever else he fancies that we have in lol!! I had never heard of laksa until he made it for me I love it!

  • The Dukkah is nice mixed with olive oil and then used to coat cubes of veg for roasting (butternut works really well, as do most squashes/pumpkin, sweet potato etc) It's also nice with roast potato wedges. Mixed with olive oil it is also a nice rub for lamb or chicken. Or mix it with greek yoghurt to make a yummy dip.
