'Cleaning' Laptop?

My laptop is running very slow, its about four years old now so I suppose this is to be expected. However, it has been suggested that I should give it a good clean.
I have bought an 8gb data stick, and have moved most of the cd's and photo's I want to keep. I believe I have to do something then which puts the laptop back to its factory settings, then install the original disk again (if I can find it).
When it comes to stuff on Word and Excel, is there an easy way to save this? Also, what about all my favourites in my internet? That is the real hassle which has put me off doing this for a long time - would I have to search out all the websites from scratch again?
Thanks for any help - I am so dim when it comes to technology.

Thanks for that. I have Firefox installed but not sure how to sync them. How easy is it?0 -
in your documents and settings folder you will have various users.
select your user name and thats what we call a profile.
you can view your my docs/desktop/favourites
just make a copy of each folder to a usb stick
reinstall and then copy them backThe orginal post in this thread has a very very slim chance of being about money saving. The post is more than likely to ask a question that google could answer better than any of us.0 -

As I have all e-mails on a hotmail account, am I right thinking that this will not be affected at all, so I can save some documents from Word and Excel by sending myself an e-mail using these as an attachment?0

Before you go and return your laptop to factory settings have you defragmented the hard drive to try and speed things up ?
You can also run a free program at http://www.ccleaner.com/ that will free up some space.
As loaner says how much RAM have you got ? that might be your problem.0 -

Clareski,
You are correct.
And what Devizes actually means is go to THIS site and install its utility. That will then enable you to upload your Firefox bookmarks from your computer to Foxmark's server.
You will then be able to download your bookmarks back to your computer when you've finished sorting out your cleanup.
The purpose of the Foxmarks facility (which is free) is to enable people who have more than one computer to keep their bookmarks synched. When you add a new bookmark to one computer, this gets added to the other computers automatically, the next time they run Firefox.
The side-effect of this is that you can use it as a safe place to store your bookmarks if you have only one computer.
Which is handy.
Don't laugh at banana republics. :rotfl:
As a result of how you voted in the last three General Elections,
you'd now be better off living in one.
