Help with out of date food

Options
I broke my wrist on Saturday and since then yhe kids have either eaten out or had very easy toast type food, and some fresh fruit, and I haven't fancied much. I have now got sorted with a lightweight cast on and am able to do a bit more, but I had lots of food in when I fell and now have the following stuff which is at, or just past, its sell by date and I really don't want to throw it out:

2 tubs of plain langley farm cottage cheese (date of 21 July)
4 vanilla activia yoghurts (date 25 July)
4 WW yoghurts (25 July)
6 eggs (26 July)
225g piece of sirloin steak (previously frozen and defrosted on Saturday)
mushrooms (a bit sad looking)
2 tubs of cheese and chive dip (24 July)
punnet strawberries (22 July)
2 bulbs of fennel (starting to look a bit iffy)
tub double cream (25 July)
carton of defrosted whipped cream

I also have lots of storecupboard ingredients, tinned toms, beans, milk, margarine, cheese, pasta etc.

i thought I might make a yorkshire curd tart with the cottage cheese, but have NO clue where to start and if you can use cottage instead of curd cheese.

Other than that I don't know what to make - money is tight and I don't want to chuck stuff out! Anyone got any ideas?

How about a quiche with the mushrooms, eggs and bit of cream?

    Steak and creamy mushroom sauce?

The eggs will probably be ok after 26th as it's usually only a BBE not a useby -there is a bowl of water test you can do to see if they are off or not.

Hope your wrist mends soon ;)

The sell by date's just for stock control and isn't the same as a use by date. Even the best before date doesn't mean you can't eat it, just that it will be past its prime. I'm sure Martin has a guide on the terms somewhere. Unfortunately I'm no good with menu ideas (DH does the cooking:D), but I'm sure there's a thread where you type in your ingredients and out pops a receipe. Maybe a more dedicated OSMS will be able to point them out.:o

We often eat food at or past its sell by date and often veggies just need peeling and we're still going strong.

    Good luck with the wrist.
