bed sheet liners for sleeping bags

We are off camping for the first time ever this year and I have a query. I have bought 2 white sheets from the charity shop and was hoping to turn them into liners for sleepin bags, as we have mummy style sleeping bags do theliners have to be the same shape or can I just leave them rectangular? Does it all get a bit cramped in the foot end if liner is rectangular? Will bed sheets do the same trick as expensive shop bought ones?

  • I use exactly the same sleeping bags, and to be honest when it is hot, we just put the sheet in as is, without having shaped ones..that way if too hot in night you can unzip the bag and use the sheet as a base..put bag on top, even with the hood it is cosy. The bags wash easily so may even not be worth bothering with..and more comfortable if left folded length ways and just leave the opening on the same side as the zip..
Others may have different experiences, and have been camping for a long time..hope you enjoy it.

I made liners from cheap cotton remnants, but you really need to either put a zip in them or leave them only semi sewn up on the side otherwise it's difficult to climb in and out of the sleeping bag.

I don't normally use a sleeping bag liner, because I find the bag gets dirtier on the outside than on the inside when we're camping, and needs washing anyway. But when I was younger, my nsn had at some point made a quilt cover from some old brushed cotton sheets, I used this in my sleeping bag for a bit of extra warmth, and it was wonderful!
Bit of a pain to try and climb in and out though :)

I remember camping years ago in April, it was freezing, with the brownies in the triangular tents which were open all roung the botom of the tent - my mam made an inner bag out of a flannelette sheet and I was lovely and warm. I dont think you need inner sheets now with all the tents being enclosed.
