kidney beans in a can - are these OK?

Evening lovely old stylers!
Quick question - just finishing a chilli con carne, went to open the kidney beans can, and OH thought it looked expanded... I opened it, lots of air came out, and there are some bubbles in the juice. Is this anything to worry about? Or have they been having a little party in there???!
thanks in advance :D

Seriously, there is severe risk of poisoning, I don't normally worry too much about ood cans, but if there is a failure in the processing or a breach of the cans integrity, very serious.

    see example http://www.foodpoisonblog.com/tags/canned-beans/
  • my OH just told me that, too! and said he had no intention of letting me use them :o
thanks for saving our dinner! :A

Kidney beans are one thing that you really have to be careful with, even canned ones I would bin them to be on the safe side ,better than being poisoned

More concerned about saving your life than your dinner! As I said tinned goods are normally so safe and long lasting but scary when they go wrong.

They allow the growth of bacteria that only grow in the absence of air and produce toxins that can't be removed by heating. Not saying that it was this problem with yours, but this is something I would never take the risk with.

Give me good old Salmonella to deal with any day, at least cooking kills it.

I have only recently bought kidney beans for the first time in 20 odd years as no one else likes them. I was planning to make some sort of pate type stuff for my lunches, not sure I'll bother now.

Hope your dinner wasn't too spoiled by the lack of beans.

    Zzzzz

The beans haven't been having the party - something much, much smaller has to produce that extra gas. And it would have only needed one of them to survive the canning process to start the whole thing off.

PS. Anyway, you've just invented Arrabbiata Bolognese Sauce.

I'd have probably eaten them, :(
If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.

Aren't there always bubbles in the juice? Or have I been eating dodgy beans all these years?!
