Help! Speakers won't work

Has anyone got an idea what is wrong? A couple of days ago may speakers stopped working and all I get is an occasional electronic bleep from the computer itself. I tried all the usual obvious things like making sure that the power to the speakers was on but no joy. So I then tried the troubleshooter which mainly involved uninstalling and re-installing but without success.
Device manager shows a yellow circle with a black exclamation mark against
"C-Media AC-97 Audio Device" and in General when I click on this item it states "this device cannot start (code10)"
Thanks in advance

it's not a problem with your speakers but your sound card.
The "C-Media AC-97 Audio Device" is your sound card. As you've already unistalled and re-installed try doing a system restore to before it went tits up and see if it's ok, just incase something has started to conflict.
If not you may need a new sound card.0 -
What make of PC have you got, as I shall point you in the right direction
for the drivers if you are stuck as where and which to get.0 -
Hi Mr Skint
I've got an e-machines 960 - bought from PC World just over 3 years ago.
Hi scheming_gypsy
I had a problem some time ago with a virus and turned system restore off. So that makes that option a non-starter.

firiends PC had this same problem just yesterday same error message, same on board sound card ...
I cured it with system restore but it seemed to be caused by the installation of either an ipod or an MP3 playerEx forum ambassador

I had this exact same problem a while back. Did all the things mentioned above to no effect, ended up buying a new sound card from novatech, only cost £10 and works a charm (especially with the new speakers I got at the same time

Downloading the driver has solved the problem.
Thanks for all the advice.0
