  • I agree with the obove poster, about not having a holiday.
If you don't have any way of funding it, and you've already put it on plastic, how do you expect to gather together any spending money.
Going away on holidayis lovely - IF you can afford it.
In my opinion, the credit cards should be used in an emergency, such as sudden car repairs.

I know you don't need any more problems, but please sit your hubby down and explain how bad things are.

he needs to be singing from the same hymn sheet as you are and until then, you're the only one shouldering this heavy load.

    Take care of yourself.

I agree also, we shouldnt have booked the holiday, when we booked it we didnt know DH's wages would be going down, but all the same we were still in mega debt. I just felt I needed to take my children away, they are 10 & 12 & have never had a proper holiday, DD comes home from school & goes on about one friend going to greece & another going to America etc & I felt like I was depriving them.
I do have some spending money saved (in quidco) again of course it could have been put to better use (pay something off) and my older son (will give an update on him in a sec) owes me £140 which he is paying me back in the next couple of weeks so thats a little more toward spending.

OK I also have a 22 year old son who lives with us, he has his own shop, totally funded by my parents, doesnt make enough money to fund it himself, had a part time job, use to pay me £30 a week (housekeeping) but business seemed good one week a few months ago & stupidly he quit his job, and, of course, it was just a one off, has been bad since. My parents have told him they cant keep paying his rent, bills, rates etc and are stopping in September, they hoped this would force him to find a full time job, but so far in the space of about 2 months he had been to 2 interviews but didnt get either job. he has just got work in a pub, part time, but says it will increase over the summer. He says he can start payong me housekeeping again in a few weeks, so i plan to try & manage without it & use it to pay off (a tiny amount) of my debt.

    Hi SanMarco,

I know that DFW is about help and support and not judgement so please don't take this the wrong way but I'm not sure you should be taking expensive holidays and buying plasma TVs if you are really desparate to get rid of your debts

Martin sums it up well - instead of asking "How can I afford the lifestyle I want on the money I have?" you need to be asking yourself "What lifestyle can I afford with the money I have?"

I agree 100% I have never used a credit card for an unnecessary expense, only if the kids needed something or I didnt have enough in the bank to pay for food or bills, DH's debt on the other hand are all from buying things he couldnt afford, he doesnt seem to see a problem, or doesn't want to.
  • Keep posting sanmarco5 - there are many people on here who can help and offer really practical advice.

I believe I know you from another group - when you used to be a childminder, so I can recall some of your previous problems.

If you feel you are able to have a holiday, then go ahead and enjoy it. If you think that all the time you're away that you'll be dreading coming home to sort out the finances, then maybe you postpone it for a while.

I think your children would prefer a happier mum and dad maybe taking them away for the odd day, than a week or two of you worrying about what faces you when you arrive home.

Whatever you decide to do we're all behind you.

The holiday is booked & paid for, if I had taken more time to think about it I probably wouldnt have done it, £950 didnt sound too bad, but we didnt take passports or spending money into consideration, although my MIL has kindly paid for our passports. We are looking forward to it & wont let the fact that we cant really afford it spoil it for us, I just hope the kids dont like it too much, as they will be wanting to go again!
