Is there any way to get rid of a default - my boyfriend has one from 2001 which has been paid off, but it's stopping him getting credit cards etc (even the capital one £200 deposit one). We are on the electrol roll. Is there any way to get rid of a default before the six years?

I do not think that there is.
I guess that the Credit Reference Agency's file will show:-
He defaulted.
He later cleared the debt.
They can make what they like of that................................I have put my clock back....... Kcolc ym0 -
