Hi guys
I have just bought a new PC but have found at the end of the day, when I go to shut down, it goes though the log off screens etc but then just hangs on the "windows is shutting down" screen and I have to press the power button on the front of the tower to get it to turn off. Is there a problem or is it just a simple adjustment I can make myself (and I mean simple
)
I'm running XP Home with SP3.
Thanks

Hi, shutdown issues has plagued most Windows Editions.
The causes are numerous, widespread and often difficult to pinpoint.
These sites will give you some idea of what to look for.

Even if your computer is setup with just one user, there may still be user profile issues.
Here is a fix and is worth installing anyway as it will do no harm.

If you installed SP3 and the problem has occurred since that time, then you know the cause.

I had a similar problem with my computer it turned out to be the Lexmark printer I had, if I disconnected the printer usb cable my computer would shutdown normally, if I left it connected it would just hang at "windows is shutting down".0

Funny you should say that glosman, it appears to be something to do with the printer!! And it's a Lexmark too. If the printer is either disconnected or switched on, it shuts down, but if the printer is connected and switched off, it hangs. Bloke who installed the PC for me on saturday knew instantly what it was, although he could only say try un/reinstalling the printer, otherwise I'll have to switch the printer on (if it's not already) to turn the PC off!!
Never had this problem with my old PC - is it something to do with SP3 do you think? My old PC had XP with SP2.0 -

Another reason not to use that products from that company...0

After 4 years of holding my finger on the off button. This sorted it out in seconds. As posted I unplugged my Lexmark all in 1 and it was cured.
When it started 4 years ago i harrassed AOL cos it started after one of their upgrades. Plus trawled the microsoft site to no avail.
Big up to you guys on this site!!!!!!!!!:T0 -
I thought I'd try to shut down with the printer switched off, but decided to go out of the room and get on with something else. Forgot about it and when I came back a few hours later, shutdown had completed!! Although I have no idea how many minutes (hours) it took.
Weirder and weirder0
