Replacement for video camera

I want to buy a replacement for our old hitachi 8mm video camera/recorder but don't know what I'm looking for. Am I looking for a digital video recorder, something that records straight onto dvd (which sounds an easy option for playback through the telly) or something else? Sorry to be vague. We only use the current video camera on holidays/birthdays/christmas so something fairly basic is ok.
