How much money would be enough?

This is partly hypathetical but also somthing OH and i have been discussing since we visted my Grandma this afternoon.

She has found her old bonds and has said to me that if i want to sort it out and claim any winnings for her and cash them in she will give me half.

I pointed out that in theory she could have thousands and she still said i could have half. The least amount we can get is £79 - the bond value so thats half each and £38.50 each but since they havent been checked since 1977 the sky is the limit.

So we have been thinking that £5,000 would clear the CC's and let us pay off some extra on the loan. £10,000 would clear the CC's, clear all debt older than 2007 and would give us about £500 to go towards the loan. £25,000 would be enough to clear all of our debts but wouldnt put us on the housing ladder - so then we said £50,0000 to get us a very nice deposit and some furniture ......

Then we said £300,000 to allow us to clear all debts and buy a house and furniture.

How much money would be enough for you?

Is there ever enough???

(BTW my nanna is the most generous person in the history of the world) :T

PS - if anyone can give me any tips on the best place to be going to check the bonds etc it would be great

In my head an ideal figure would be 200,000 - enough to pay off all my debts and the mortgage and have enough left over to get OH a newer (more reliable!) car.

But - we would still both have to work so I suppose once you include a figure for holidays, cars, clothes, cost of leaving work etc - no amount would ever be enough! x x

£50,000 would clear all the debts (including mortgage) allow me to get a new car and have a great holiday with around £5,000 left for a rainy day.

Thanks Fermi - ive been there, problem is that because Nan got them in 1977 she has the actual bonds but not the holder number - it was introduced in 1976 but she cant find it anywhere (i can forgive her for loosing it since it was 32 years ago)

I am going to give them a call tomorrow thou - just hoping they can help and will talk to me without having to talk to my Nana

I dont suppose anyone knows if there is a way to check the actual bond number?

    I see.

    Well their site says this:

    http://www.nsandi.com/help/holdersnumbers.jsp
    I don’t know my holder’s number

If you cannot find a record of your holder’s or customer number, please write to us with your name, address, details of the accounts or investments you hold, purchase dates and amounts and any account, Bond or Certificate numbers. If you have moved house or changed your marital status and forgotten to tell us, please also include previous surname and/or addresses.

To make sure we provide the highest levels of security, we cannot disclose or update personal information without the Bondholder’s signature(s). If the Bond(s) were bought for you as a child, we may not have your signature on file in which case your signature should be witnessed by one of your parents (or another adult if your parent cannot sign) so that control of any Bonds can be transferred to you.

To help us deal with your request more quickly, please contact us at the office which deals with your product.
