I didn't think bread was fattening?

I think the problem is that HM bread tastes a lot better than shop-bought so you are inclined to keep picking at it. Of course it's nicer again with butter, nicer again with jam or cheese....
So in fact the problem isn't the bread it's keeping eating when you aren't hungry - I say guiltily0 -

As previously mentioned a slice of bread contains about 100 calories (often more actually), so having 2 slices of toast for breakfast, 4 as 2 sarnies for lunch and a slice or two with tea is 800 calories straight away. There is quite often high sugar in bread (sugar is a form of carbs), sometimes fat and almost always a lot of salt (in shop bought). With most bread 4 or 5 slices would be half your recommended salt intake.
must say I'd never be able to eat the 8 slices mentioned above, as well as all the other foods to go with them all in one day
obviously fruit & veg have a very low count, but the things to avoid are fats, 200+ calories per ounce & sugars, 100+ calories per ounce, also they're both much denser, which means a tiny bit of butter on your bread will probably have more calories than the slice itself ... & they're the things most commonly added to bread (& rice/potatoes/pasta) to make them more palatable
bread & these others are often unfairly demonized imho, it's what we put on them eaten to excess that's that's the real problem0 -
I must need new glasses - I thought the title of this thread was "I didn't think breastfeeding was fattening" until I clicked on it!!!:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:
Mind you, I have just been contributing to a thread on breastfeeding!
Sorry to go off topic.0 -

Salt and sugar aren't a problem in HM bread and that's one of the reasons why many of us make our own bread.
In your example your problem would be that four slices for lunch is IMO excessive and that's what is being discussed, there is nothing inherently wrong with bread it's the quantities eaten and what is eaten on it.
More realistic might be two slices of bread for breakfast and two at lunctime, so that's 400 calories and we all need calories to get through the day.
I love bread and haven't eaten spread or butter on bread/toast etc. for over 20 years (the benefit of a dairy intolerence), as many have said it's about eating a reasonable amount of everything and burning more calories than you put in.Piglet

wow, I can't imagine eating 8 slices of bread a day. That's about half a loaf!
2 slices is enough for me, either as a sandwich at lunch, or toast for breakfst.0
