Playstation II or X box?

I intend to buy my 7 year old son a games console for Xmas.

For those of you who have experience of games consoles and younger children, what would you recommend - Playstation II or X box and which games?

Thanks.

  • Personally i have an xbox - suits me fine, but i dont have kids - there are games out there that can keep kids amused. Though the controls can be a bit much for a 7 year old to take in.

xbox's should be getting cheaper what with a new version coming out - especially if you look into a used version.

Although if i was a kid again i would choose a gamecube and just play Mariokart all day! Not sure how much these are though - they are less popular than the ps2 and xbox but they are targeted towards kids.
  • I agree with the gamecube option.I have twin girls who are 6 years old and i sold my xbox to get a gamecube.Lots more games for children which adults will love too.You can get great deals on packages they virtually give the consoles away.try toysrus, game, amazon etc.Games arent available in currys etc but if you go on ebay because its a less popular platform you can pick up used games for a couple of quid rather than £30+.Top games are mariocart, supermonkeyball, sonic.Worth a look on ebay at least.

Well I was all geared up to scream XBOX at you...until I read that it's for a child. In that case I would say PS2.

The XBOX is phenominal for adults and games like Halo will keep an average husband occupied for a matter of months ( ) but there aren't enough childrens games out on XBOX yet........ PS2 has much more choice for little ones.
Just run, run and keep on running!

  • PS2, check out toysrus and Game for their bundle offers

it's funny you mention the gamecube because my son now has a handed down super nintendo and he has loved playing Super Mario (me too!). So I'm sure he would be happy with this.

However, will he grow out of gamecube quickly? Whatever I buy now will have to last him for a good few years. Also what extra' s would I need to buy? Memory cards etc.?
