The first episode was yesterday, History channel 7pm - Sky 529, Virgin TV 234.
Wonderful viewing. It brought memories of my childhood mostly spent with my gran.
They had 3000 calories a day. You can see how they used it up.
In the first week were they were exhausted – cooking and washing Not at all fit.
'People petitioned the government to get rationing introduced as it was much fairer.
but there were steep price rises.' However, many people had ‘stocked up’ on tins and stuff that keeps, pulses etc as they knew rationing was coming. Of course, you had to have spare money to do that. If you lived hand to mouth you had problems.
Many people would have a good stock of jams, chutney, preserved food, and as we do have, a storecupboard.
The children were used to snacking between meals and found the first days very difficult.
They are used to living on ready and fast food. I loved the way they chucked the soup, I would have expected them to use it as a base for more - watery but edible.
People ate a lot of bread. I did in the 50's. That is why we had all of that jam!
I look forward to today's episode.
