Identifying and Clearing Debt

Hi, when I was younger I moved out of my parents house very young and rented. I got into a lot of debt, mainly with unpaid phone bills / council tax etc and this affected my credit rating badly.

I'm not older and wiser, earning above the national average. At the end of last year, I took out a mortgage but still struggle with my credit rating. I understand I must still have outstanding debts which will need to be paid, but I'm unsure how I would identify these as well as contacting the companies to arrange payment.

I really want to get these debts paid off so I can rebuild my credit score, but I have no idea where to start. I'd assume I first need a credit report, in which case can you recommend one which will give me all the information I need? Would this also give me company details which would allow me to contact them and arrange payment? Any help would be much appreciated.

Thank you all in advance.

    Hello

Have you got your free credit report? It would be worth doing this (www.experian.co.uk). Make sure you put in all addresses you have lived at so that you can get details of all of the debts.

    I hope this helps.

Im in a kind of similar position to you davies83, Ive spent years running away from my debts, but im now in a position to be able to pay them all in ful and want to do so to improve my credit rating so I can get a mortgage.

Ive got my credit reports and some but not all of them are listed on there, those that are dont all have a name of who I owe the money to and theres no reference nos to use if I was to conact them.

Somebody on another thread suggested asking for a SAR from the companies I origianlly got in debt with to find who it had been passed to with ref. nos etc. So far Ive found this impossible to do as I can't find adresses to write to etc and is jus to compliced for me.

Im now hoping that they will write to me to chase the debt now I have put my current address on my credit file (one company has already) but I would be interested to know of any other ways of drawing attention to myself with the creditors.

hi, does anyone out there know what happens to your debt after the six years is up and the info has gone from your credit file? can your debtors still chase you for the money? or is the debt wiped as well?
