Try the Virgin Mastercard...I have booked Travelodge recently...with a nil balance!!! Obviously just pay in full on arrival. Can use online & abroad as well.

Note - Electron cards can be hit & miss online also.

just a few tips about hotel booking ive found with only having a Visa Electron

a number of the broker sites(travelstay.cometc) that need your credit or debit card to hold the rooms for you dont take Visa electron debit cards

    Hi from TravelStay!

I just found your post about TravelStay.com and Visa Electron Cards.

Could I just clarify that TravelStay.com does take Visa Electron – we take many Visa Electron bookings every day.

However, I agree with you that the Electron card system does sometimes appear to have a problem with some online transactions. I’ve experienced this myself!

As such, I've raised the Electron card issue again with our transaction gateway to check further. However, historically we’ve found that in most cases the problem was due to the customers Electron card not being authorised for Internet use by their issuing bank. I used to have an old Woolwich Electron card with this same problem!

There’s a note from VISA about this on their website:
    http://corporate.visa.com/md/fs/consumer/visadebit.jsp?it=searchQuicklink

Visa Electron: Visa Electron is ideal for customers with newer banking relationships or in countries that require all transactions to be authorized. Authorization can be either PIN- or signature-based. Internet transactions can also be supported, at the issuer’s discretion. Visa Electron is accepted at any Visa merchant location with an electronic authorization terminal, throughout the Visa global ATM network and at telephone and Internet merchants accepting Visa.’

The whole of team at TravelStay.com strives to serve as many customers as possible - so we're happy to investigate your concerns further and make any amendments we can to provide further payment options.

    Kind regards from TravelStay :j

PS. Have a great summer ..
